One of Stephen Sondheim’s most popular shows, “Into the Woods” intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The show covers multiple themes: growing up, parents and children, accepting responsibility, morality, and finally, wish-fulfillment and its consequences. The characters include Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, as well as many others. The musical is tied together by an original story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, their interaction with a Witch who has placed a curse on them, and their instances with other storybook characters during their journey.
“Into the Woods” will have performances at the Flickinger Center on April 10, 11, 17 & 18 at 7PM and a matinee on April 12 at 2PM. All tickets are $10 and are available at Alamo Optical, Books Revisited and at the Flickinger Center.

Little Red Riding Hood was last seen going “Into the Woods” shortly after visiting the Baker and his Wife. The couple stated that she was going to Grandmother’s House, a lovely cottage standing underneath three large oak trees. The couple further affirmed that the little girl was certain of her way; that the cottage was “down the dell, the path is straight, I know it well”. The Baker’s Wife was quoted as saying “She had quite a load of food in her basket; breads, sticky buns and pies. I just hope no wolves come her way”.

There are a great deal of cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale “Into the Woods”. Tying all these characters together are the Baker and his Wife (played by Heather Julian-Bash and Michael Kennedy Carrillo). When the couple learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell. Along their journey they encounter Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel and Jack (of beanstalk fame).
